Jodi Christensen was selected to be our local business mentor in the spotlight for this year’s March into Mentoring campaign. We went with Mentor Duluth and Mad Chicken Studio to take photographs in the great space Yoga North has in Lakeside.  Jodi has been with her mentee for 5 years and loves the rewarding experience. Let’s get to know more about Jodi!

How did you get started? Yoga North started in 1995 offering one Yoga class a week. We are still in our original location inside of St. Michael’s school in lakeside.

Why did you decide to open a business in Duluth? We are excited about helping people upgrade their life, feel good physically, mentally, and emotionally through practices that include stress reduction, breath practices, meditation, and philosophy for more skillful living. Duluth is a community of great, forward thinking people, and even though yoga is thousands of years old, it is forward thinking as well.

What is Yoga North known for?  We offer Yoga Teacher Training at the 200 and 500 hour levels, as well as, Yoga Therapy Certification. We are honored to be one of a handful of accredited schools in the entire world offering Yoga Therapy Certification.

We also offer weekly classes and workshops in asanas (postures), philosophy, meditation, and Ayurveda. We are known for SomaYoga Therapy which supports peoples of all ages and abilities; from those seeking relief from chronic pain, to those wanting to improve athletic performance.

What’s one thing you love about Duluth? The lake and the awesome community of people.

What’s your take on the Duluth economy? I think it is much better than most parts of the country. My husband and I have found it a great and worthwhile place to own businesses. We’ve found that the general populous is hardworking, honest, and loyal.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a business in Duluth? Find a business mentor, work hard, be consistent with your services and be patient, positive, and persistent.

Favorite place to eat? Lake Ave. Cafe

Favorite hidden gem? Lester Park & Lester Park Golf Course.

How long have you been a mentor? Five years

What sort of activities do you do with your mentee? Cook food, watch movies, walk on the lakewalk.

What would you say to someone thinking about becoming a mentor? If you’re thinking about it, you’re ready to do it. It doesn’t take much time, so if you think you’re too busy, you’re not. It is a rich, rewarding experience, and so much fun!!

We also asked Jodi to discuss these questions with her mentee

What do you like about spending time together?  You have a happy energy that’s really cool, weird but cool.

What activities do you enjoy doing with me?  Baking, baking is fun. Also Henna. (Henna is temporary body art painted using henna dye)

What do you like about the mentor program?  I met you. Plus every now and then they have puzzles in the letters they send out.
