Pilot lands safely thanks to plane parachute

If you’ve been on the internet today, you probably saw the video of a pilot deploying a parachute as his plane ran out of the fuel. (If you haven’t seen it, you can watch it here.) The unusual part was that the parachute wasn’t just for him. It was for the whole plane.

According to the article in The Duluth News Tribune, the pilot was able to lower the plane onto the water thanks to a built-in Cirrus Airframe Parachute System. This emergency full-plane parachute is a signature of planes built by our own Duluth-based Cirrus, and an innovation that’s saved 104 lives since its introduction.

The pilot ran out of fuel while flying from California to Hawaii, but was able to land on the water before boarding a life raft from a nearby cruise ship.

As humans, we’re grateful the pilot can return home safely. As Duluthians, we’re proud of Cirrus and the work they do.
