One of our favorite things is meeting the people behind great local businesses! Saffron & Grey is a full-service florist that specializes in weddings, events and custom made arrangements that are sure to impress. We went with Mad Chicken Studio to Tavern on the Hill for a cozy happy hour by the fire pit and got to know Abby and Layla better.
Your name: Abby & Layla Olson {sisters+owners}
Business name and location: Saffron & Grey Couture Floral Design
Years in business: This summer we will celebrate our 5th anniversary!
How did you get started? We had a ton of floral experience from working at a shop {together!} during college. While working our grown-up corporate jobs post college, we were still doing so much free-lance and incessantly discussing everything floral all day every day, we decided to come up with a name and form a corporation. Within weeks the Flower Cart went up for sale and we immediately jumped in with both feet, quit our day jobs and completed 87 weddings within our first 6 months of owning the shop. The shop has been happily growing & we have been expanding our gift & home offerings, as well as our space, as we have now taken over the old Game Planet space & turned it into our studio/class room/offices.
Why did you choose Duluth? We are originally from the Northwoods of Cook, Minnesota, but spent a lot of time in Duluth growing up. Then, we came for college and fell in love.
What is one thing your business is primarily known for? Unique, couture, nature-inspired floral.
What is your favorite thing about Duluth? It’s a tie between the gorgeous city itself & the amazing craft beer scene!
What do you think about the current Duluth economy? We think it’s booming, and we are so excited about all the new businesses!
What would be your advice to someone thinking about opening a new business in Duluth? Protect your magic! Do what you love, so you can continue to love it, and hire out for the rest- accountants, advisers, etc, it is so worth it!
Favorite place to eat in Duluth: Our current lunch obsession is Toasty’s.
Favorite local business in Duluth: Bent Paddle for beer and for gear!
Favorite Duluth Hidden Gem: The Spirit Room & Sclavis {technically in Superior, but we LOVE them}
